WORKSPACE
Update: I wish I did this project using my newly improved SFX skills and sculpting rather than resulting to purchasing from the very industry I am now completely against.
Workspace is a series of photographs exploring the overconsumption of meat. It contributes to my study into how society influences horror and how I can visualise contemporary societal fears, predominantly from the UK, through the horror film medium. The rise of the vegetarian and vegan diets can be attributed to the increased concern for the environment, one’s health and the ethical belief that animal agriculture is immoral. Seeing images of raw meat – available to purchase from our local supermarkets – represented in such an unappetizing and bloody way can prove disturbing to certain individuals. This includes both people who abstain from the consumption of meat as well as people who do consume meat. The second group of individuals perhaps don't want to think about the animal and how the meat – or organs/body parts – look before they are prepared and packaged for sale. This forces them to confront their conscience and fears of whether or not their behaviour is in line with their constructs of a 'good person'. This, in turn, is a great example of how contemporary society and its’ fears can influence horror imagery.
