Norwich University of the Arts

During my MA studies, I constructed unconventional pieces of work; including a moving image installation called Praxinoscope Theatre of Horrors Presents the Decapitated Head of Mr Doe. This was my final MA project through which I explored filmmaking outside of the digital spectrum. For the NUA MA show, I have created various prints for sale; the designs of which were made by me and so were the online advertisements. Another project I was developing during my MA was a study into how contemporary societal fears can influence horror imagery. This has resulted in an experimental horror anthology called Tremor as well as a series of photographs called Workspace. The latter explores the consumption of meat in the USA and UK.

You’re So Sweet 2017

Summary

You’re So Sweet is a body horror experimental film. It deals with themes of excess and cannibalism.

Tremor 2018

Summary

Tremor is an experimental horror anthology exploring how current societal fears can influence horror imagery. The three films are supposed to represent different types of fears. Anna portrays body dysmorphia, Byron is the embodiment of the fear of commitment; whereas, Joanna depicts the episodic cranial sensory shock and sleep paralysis. The opening sequence and interlude were inspired by my Workspace series of photographs exploring the overconsumption of meat in the UK and USA.

Home Footage 2018

Summary

I rediscovered some family videos from about 12 years ago and thought that the place we visited was creepy. It gave me an idea to add some more eeriness to it through editing. In the future, I will edit more found footage videos in a POV horror style.

The Decapitated Head of Mr Doe 2018

Summary

This project is my reaction to the oversaturation of digital media. As a filmmaker, I’m tired of creating digital work which is only consumed by audiences via the digital medium. Through this project, I don’t want to demonize the digital media but to offer an alternative, a break from it.

In a way, my Praxinoscope Theatre is a take on techno-paranoia, a popular topic discussed by a variety of media formats which in turn echoes my continued research into how current societal fears can influence horror imagery. Continuing with this theme my work took on a cyber-punk feel. Regarding the choice of the moving image projected by the Praxinoscope, I decided on a fetishized decapitated head of an old man as I’m also interested in the perversion of audiences. Finally, I wanted my MA project to showcase all of the creative experimentation I have conducted throughout this year, including my newly developed interest in stop motion animation and sculpting.
